No worries at all

Golden Bears Defeat the Trojans 42 - 24
by Drew Markol, The Intelligencer
Upper Moreland was missing two top wrestlers against an old and talented rival Wissahickon. But sophomore Zach Lyall's clutch win helped the Bears pull through.
UPPER MORELAND - It wasn't quite a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, but Upper Moreland wrestling coach Stefan Muller was more than a bit worried about Thursday night's home match against Wissahickon.
Not only was this one the Suburban One League American Conference opener for both teams, but it matched two teams with designs on winning a title. And the Trojans have tormented the Golden Bears over the years.
"We had to win," said UM sophomore 112-pounder Zack Lyall. "The first match is always the hardest and, if we lost, our chances (of winning the SOL American) would be over." The fact that the Bears were without two stalwarts - seniors James Nicholson and Max Agasar - didn't help Muller's dinner settle well, either.
"I was nervous before the match and then they won the coin flip and I got more nervous," Muller said. "We had to do some mixing and matching, but our guys came through."
Indeed they did. Upper Moreland's rugged middle of the lineup, led by seniors Tim Santry and Jake Ellis and junior Will Dill, piled up 18 points to help the Golden Bears pull away for a 42-24 win.
What the victory did was keep the Golden Bears in line for a late-season showdown against defending SOL American Conference champ Norristown. The Eagles beat UM last season to clinch the crown and keep the Golden Bears from winning the first wrestling title in school history.
"You don't want to ever look ahead, but we needed this one," Muller said. "We were down the two guys going in, and Wissahickon was without one of the Watkins brothers, but the guys we had performed."
When Lyall took the mat, the score was tied at 12. At the start of the third period of his match, he was down 4-1 to Aaron Rodriguez. However, an escape and takedown midway through the final period forced overtime. And in the extra session, Lyall scored a takedown and picked up two back points to seal the win. "When Zack got the takedown to tie it that gave him a little confidence," Muller said. "And then he had that look in his eye after that that he could win that match.
"That was a big win for us - and then our guys who have been there came through."
Ellis (130) and Santry (135) each had first-minute falls and Dill (140) won by forfeit to turn what was a close match into an insurmountable 36-15 UM lead with only three matches to go.
"We have the guys who can pull it off," Lyall said. "And we were able to get the win."

HORSHAM - It's definitely not a surprise that Upper Moreland finds itself in second place after Tuesday's quarterfinal round of the ninth annual Ralph Wetzel Holiday Classic wrestling tournament. A total of six Golden Bears will be in Wednesday's semifinals; they trail only Downingtown East. Jake Ellis at 125, John Bolich at 171 and James Nicholson at 189 are returning champions. Two others - 130-pounder Tim Santry and Will Dill at 140 - finished second a year ago, while 103-pound Bobby Harmon was in middle school last December and reached the semis the easy way. He was one of only five in the weight class, which means his semifinal bout against Bensalem's Mike Pritchard will be the first time he sees action. Despite the fact he is the defending 119-pound champion, Ellis is seeded second behind another returning champ, Malvern Prep's Jimmy Stowell, who was only a freshman when he won the Wetzel in 2008. Ellis used his No. 2 status as incentive when he scored a quick takedown and went on to an 11-0 major decision over Bensalem's Anthony Prisco in their quarterfinal match. "Definitely," a determined Ellis said. "I don't like messing around, I just wanted to get out there and pin (Prisco) and I got the match started as quickly as possible so he had no chance." Santry was extremely impressive with his fall over Brennan Weiss of Wissahickon in just 58 seconds. His semifinal bout will be one of the day's highlights as he'll face Bensalem's Nick Lippincott in a battle of wrestlers with identical 7-0 records. Host Hatboro-Horsham only has three in the semifinals but the Hatters picked up enough bonus points in the first two rounds to place them third in the team standings. Defending 112-pound champion Matt Harkins, the second seed at 119, will be joined by teammates Bryan Wu at 140 and Corey Bodnar at 145. Standing sixth in the team race, Central Bucks East has five in the semifinals - Mike Laurinaitis (112), Nick Dau (135), Andrew Foltyn (160), Joe Mannino (171) and Zac Mysza (285). Clinging to a 3-0, third period lead, Mannino used a two-on-one on the left wrist to catch a tiring Dan Berlin of Hatboro-Horsham for a couple of near falls and a 9-0 major decision. "It all depends on the person I'm wrestling," said Mannino as he explained why he likes the two-on-one. "If they know what I'm doing and they counteract it I won't use it, but like tonight when they're tired, I like to use it because they have no counter for it." Archbishop Wood was 10th in the team standings with three in the semifinals; Jake Topley at 103, McDermott at 112 and Kevin Larason at 145 will try to advance to the championship finals when actions resumes today at 9 a.m. "I like to start out in front because I know I can take the kid if I take him down first," Topley said. "I think I'm better on my feet because I'm taller (than most 103 pounders) so I'm very comfortable when we're neutral."

Upper Moreland sends six to Wetzel semis

Wu came in with a 2-2 record, but scored a first period fall in 1:33 in his opening match and a come-from-behind, quarterfinal fall over St. Joseph's Prep's Kevin Byrne in 3:35. "I was leading in the beginning but then I got a little lazy," Wu said. "When I saw the (second period) score that I was losing, I knew I had to do something to get the lead - and I caught him on his back."

Santry, Nicholson & J. Bolich Win Gold

by Drew Markol, The Intelligencer
HORSHAM - For the second year in a row Upper Moreland finished second in the team standings and the Golden Bears, along with Malvern Prep, each had a tournament-best three individual champions.
Leading the way for UM were seniors Tim Santry (130) and James Nicholson (189), along with junior John Bolich (171). All three won titles and all have been on the top step at this tournament before. Santry won it as a freshman and sophomore, to go along with this year, and Nicholson now has two Wetzel titles. For Bolich, this was his third and he'll likely get a chance to become the only four-time winner next year.
"I was just thinking that I needed to go out there and see what he's got and see what I could do," said Santry, who needed only 1:36 to pin Downingtown East's Kevin Sager in the finale. "Last year I lost in the last three seconds here and I didn't want that to happen again. That was in the back of my mind a little bit."
Like Santry, Bolich dominated his final as he thumped another Cougar, Rob Fitzgerald, 11-0. "I had forgotten that Downingtown East was in the tournament and he (Fitzgerald) was pretty tough," Bolich said. "I've been trying to attack more in my matches and I have more confidence this year and that's helping me."
As for Nicholson, he was well aware of his opponent in the finals, Malvern Prep's Bobby Scaramuzza. The two had met three times before with Nicholson winning each time. He made it 4-0 with a solid 5-1 win. "My conditioning is better this year and that's helping me," Nicholson said. "I'm just going one match at a time and trying to get better. And our team is doing well. We want to make a good run at district duals and win as many matches as we can."
In addition, junior Will Dill placed second at 140, senior Jake Ellis placed second at 125 while freshman Bobby Harmon was third at 103 for the Golden Bears.

UM Hammers PW to stay Unbeaten in SOL American
PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - Teams that have championships on their minds wrestle the way Upper Moreland did Wednesday night. The Golden Bears, who have never won a wrestling title of any kind in school history, moved a step closer to one with an impressive 48-18 thrashing of Plymouth Whitemarsh in a Suburban One League American Conference match.
The victory pushed UM to 3-0 in the conference and kept the Golden Bears in line for a winner-take-all matchup against defending American Conference champ Norristown on Feb. 10. "We have our big six that we count on, but our other guys did really well tonight," UM coach Stefan Muller said. "This was definitely a good, collective effort from the whole team."
Now, the Golden Bears will tell you to a man that they're taking things one match at a time, but human nature being what it is, that's hard to do. In other words, if they keep wrestling like they can, both they and the Eagles will be undefeated in the conference and will settle things on the mat in the last conference match for both in a few weeks.
"We knew we had to come out strong and we did that," said UM senior Jake Ellis, whose pin at 125 pounds was one of six for the Golden Bears. "We had to try and go for pins and stay off our backs. Our younger guys have been stepping up a lot, and we need that to help our team win. They're all working hard in practice and getting better."
And what about the impending duel with Norristown? "We'll think about Norristown at the time," Ellis, now 13-2, said with a smile. "We have to keep working hard and make sure we're ready for everyone we wrestle."
Bobby Harmon (103), Zack Lyall (112), Will Dill (140), Max Agasar (152) and Dan Bolich (160) had the UM falls along with Ellis. The pins from Harmon and Lyall (the match started at 171) gave the Golden Bears the lead for good at 18-9 and they never looked back. "We were aggressive for the most part up and down the lineup, and that's what we need," Muller said. "There were a lot of good things out there tonight."
The best individual matchup was also the first one as a pair of juniors, UM's John Bolich and PW's John-Michael Staudenmayer hooked up at 171. Staudenmayer, a state qualifier who had a 41-3 mark last season, squeezed out a 2-1 win that saw Bolich ride Staudenmayer for the entire third period, drawing a stalling point against the Colonial. "Staudenmayer is a state-caliber kid and John came out and banged right with him," Muller said. "I hope that shows John that he's right there with anyone."

Wrestling: GA, UM tackle tough teams at CR North
NEWTOWN TWP. - Germantown Academy and Upper Moreland both have hopes of winning league championships and advancing multiple wrestlers deep into the postseason, and Saturday's Council Rock North Elite Duals proved to be a nice tuneup. The Patriots and Golden Bears had a chance to square off, and each met up with a pretty good District Three team in Middletown. Both also enjoyed beating up on Interboro.
At the end of the day, GA remained undefeated at 8-0 with victories over Upper Moreland (35-24), Interboro (60-10) and Middletown (41-25). 'We all showed up to wrestle and had a good day," said senior 171-pound captain Dan Grabfelder. "We have a young team that has matured a lot. Our future looks very promising."
Upper Moreland (10-6) went 1-2, falling to GA and Middletown (45-17) and beating Interboro (56-21). "It was good to see kids we don't usually see," said UM junior 171-pounder John Bolich, who went 3-0 to improve to 18-1. "Reputations aren't at stake."
Originally, seven teams were scheduled to participate in the duals tournament. But CR North had to drop out because of an outbreak of Herpes gladiatorum, commonly called mat herpes, that originated in the team's practice room. La Salle and Plymouth Whitemarsh decided to skip the tournament, even though no CR North wrestlers have stepped on the mats that were used on Saturday.
Coaches Steve Hill of GA and Stefan Muller of Upper Moreland both credited CR North for not canceling the tournament.
B.J. Crozier, Chris Dinnien, John Allenson, T.J. Nolan and Chuck Boddy all went 3-0 for the Patriots, who are 2-0 in the Inter-Ac with three matches to go. The team's undefeated record will be on the line at next week's Gilman Duals in Baltimore and the following weekend at Wyoming Seminary. "They're stacked," Grabfelder said of the Blue Knights. "It'll be good for us to have a dual meet with them."
Hill, a Council Rock graduate, acknowledges that Wyoming Seminary will win that match and capture the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Invitational. He also realizes that Blair Academy (N.J.) will win the National Prep Championships team title and has set a goal of placing in the top seven in the 120-team field.
The coach was pleased with Saturday's effort. "It's about peaking at the right time, and we did a good job today," he said. "We got better as the day went along." Hill believes tough competition makes his team better and has no problem taking his wrestlers to tournaments such as the Ironman, Beast of the East and the Tiger Classic in Delaware. "Nobody on our team is undefeated," he said.
Besides Bolich, James Nicholson went 3-0 for Upper Moreland. The Golden Bears are 3-0 in the Suburban One League American Conference, with a showdown with fellow unbeaten Norristown early next month. "We want that bad," said Bolich, who rebounded from his 2-1 loss on Wednesday to PW standout John Staudenmayer.

Santry, Dill, J. Bolich and Nicholson go 5-0 for the day

ABINGTON - As the District One Class AAA Dual Meet tournament nears, Tim Santry likes the way Upper Moreland is wrestling.
On Saturday, the Golden Bears went 4-1 at the Abington Duals.
"We had a pretty good day," said Santry, a 130-pound senior. "We're looking pretty good. I think we can hang with most teams."
Upper Moreland (15-7) will find out today where it is seeded at district duals, which begin on Thursday.
The Golden Bears went 3-1 in Pool A, beating Pottsgrove (42-31), William Tennent (57-15) and Abington (48-24) before missing a chance to compete for the championship by losing a 36-36 tiebreaker to North Catholic. They beat Bensalem, 37-18, to take third place.
The Bears were successful despite forfeiting at two weight classes.
"All things considered, we're feeling good," said coach Stefan Muller. "We got five matches and went 4-1. That's fine."
Santry, a two-time state qualifier who won an eighth-place medal as a sophomore, went 5-0 on the day. So did teammates Will Dill, John Bolich and James Nicholson.
The Bears are looking forward to the Feb. 10 showdown with Norristown, with the Suburban One League American Conference title probably on the line. They are also expecting good things in the individual postseason tournaments. "We have a couple of guys who have a chance to make it to states, maybe five or six if we wrestle our best," Santry said.
Meanwhile, Tennent (8-9) went 3-2 on the day, beating Downingtown West for fifth place. "We did real well," said coach Joe Rigous. "My guys are working hard, and that's what counts."
Freshman 112-pounder Kevin Flack went 5-0 to improve to 21-0. The Panthers still have to wrestle five SOL National matches, including three that were postponed because opponents had a skin condition, and Flack is hopeful. "We have to put our hearts into it, work hard in the room, stay in shape and wrestle smart," he said.
Archbishop Wood (3-13) had a long day, going 0-5. Kevin Larason had two pins and a decision at 152 pounds for the Vikings, who host North Catholic, which won the tournament, on Wednesday.
"Our kids fought hard," said coach Kurt Paroly.

Upper Moreland Advances to Quarters

As the sixth seed, Spring-Ford earned a first-round bye. Upper Moreland, as the tournament's No. 11 seed, had to wrestle a first-round match, and was in the midst of toppling host Pottsgrove when Spring-Ford's wrestlers walked into the gym looking like the fresher team.
The Golden Bears, however, proved tougher, handling Spring-Ford, 33-24, on Thursday to advance to next weekend's quarterfinal round at Pottstown.
"If I called this an upset, I would be underestimating our team," said UM coach Stefan Muller. "Rankings are subjective. Spring-Ford is a good team, but I think after the top four, you have a bunch of teams who are right there."
Upper Moreland is right there with the final eight teams after the field was whittled down from the 24 that started in the tournament. The Bears (17-7) will now dance with the third seed, Boyertown, which thumped Neshaminy, 56-13, in the second round to improve to 17-5. The match will be next Friday night.
Spring-Ford (11-5) got the jump on Upper Moreland with wins in the first three bouts, but Upper Moreland grabbed a 13-12 advantage thanks to a 12-4 major decision from Will Dill at 140 pounds.
It took 11 seconds for the Rams to get the lead back with a pin, but it was all UM from there, as it picked up four wins - two by fall and one by technical fall.
Max Agasar started the winning stretch with a pin in 2:33 and that was followed by a 5-0 victory from Daniel Bolich. Agasar's pin at 152 gave the Bears a 19-18 lead that swelled to 22-18 on the strength of Bolich's workmanlike 5-0 triumph at 160.
"Max's match was a big momentum match," said Muller, "but we really anticipated him winning. Daniel Bolich at 160 went against a kid we didn't know anything about, and Daniel's been up and down, but he put his best foot forward and came away with a win."
At 171, John Bolich appeared on his way to a major decision, holding a 9-0 lead late into the third period, but Bolich didn't settle for the four team points for major. Instead, he finally was able to grind down his opponent and deck him with 48 seconds left. The win upped Bolich's record to 26-1.
James Nicholson followed at 189 and ran away with a 22-7 victory, scoring the technical fall with 16 seconds left in his bout. Nicholson is now 24-2.
To make it to the second round, Upper Moreland dispatched Pottsgrove, 48-27, earlier in the night, which was a slight improvement over the 42-31 verdict the Bears tagged on the Falcons in a match earlier this year.

Muller made the right call for UM

UM title showdown on Tuesday

Upper Moreland, Norristown to share wrestling title

At first it was up in the air, then it was on and now it's off.
The Upper Moreland/Norristown wrestling match, originally scheduled for last Wednesday, but postponed because a Golden Bears wrestler contracted mat herpes, will not be held.
So, instead of the teams meeting Tuesday, as was agreed upon last week, to decide the Suburban One League American Conference championship, they will share the title.
"In this case, I honestly think this is the best-case scenario," UM coach Stefan Muller said. "There is a limited time frame with sectionals next Saturday, and you have the herpes issue.
"From a Norristown perspective, you could worry about putting your kids in harm's way. I know I wouldn't be too excited (to wrestle the match) if we were on the opposite end. There was no easy solution."
Muller was afraid his team might have had to forfeit the match or that it might be rescheduled for the week between sectionals and districts.
"You can't penalize Norristown, because we were the ones who had the wrestler with mat herpes," Muller said. "And having it between the tournaments just didn't make sense.
"Wrestlers are at different weights and you're in tournament mode. This was the best way it could have been handled."
The Golden Bears were seeking their first outright wrestling title in school history, but now join the 1966 team (Bux-Mont League co-champions) as co-holders of the championship.

Fantastic Section for Upper Moreland

Posted on February 24, 2010
Every year for years and years, come tournament time, at least one area coach would mention how it seemed unfair to have Upper Moreland compete in Section One against the big boys of Council Rock North and South and Neshaminy and Pennsbury.
The Golden Bears would be lucky to get a wrestler into the consolation finals was always the comment.
Every so often, UM might have a wrestler reach the finals - but those were few and far between.
Then, a funny thing happened.
The Golden Bears got good (and coaches no longer feel sorry for them).
How good?
UM had five individual champions at last Saturday's PIAA District One Class AAA Section One event, a school record by far, and tied Pennsbury for the most champions.
More impressively, the Golden Bears placed second behind state power Council Rock South in the team standings, leaving Pennsbury, CR North and Neshaminy in their wake.

Upper Moreland's promise pays off

Posted on February 26, 2010
The Golden Bears have been on an upswing, and showed just how much they have improved with an unprecedented five champions at Section One.
They took their lumps and bumps, had their egos bruised and dented, and all the while the losses kept piling up.
It would have been easy to say, 'the heck with it, why are we doing this; why don't we just quit and hang with our friends, maybe get a job and make a little spending cash?'
They didn't - and now, four years later, Upper Moreland's wrestlers are proving their mettle and winning medals.
The Golden Bears took over Abington High's gymnasium last Saturday with a performance for the ages, crowning an astounding five individual champions at the District One Section One tournament. A sixth wrestler, junior Will Dill, took third and will join the five champs at the District One-North tournament in Quakertown this weekend.
"Saturday was something special," said Upper Moreland's fourth-year head coach, Stefan Muller, himself a product of the UM program and a 2000 graduate. "We turned some heads in that gym. We felt like we ran that gym for a little bit, and I don't mean that in any disrespect to the programs that were there, but when was last time Upper Moreland had a night like that among Council Rock South, Council Rock North, Pennsbury, Neshaminy, and going right down the list?
"We had five champs. Council Rock South and Council Rock North didn't have five champs together. Once again, we're not thumping our chest, not at all. It's just that Upper Moreland wrestling has never seen anything like this before. We were kicked around four years ago, but these guys who came in here four years ago deserve credit for sticking with it and getting better. It was just an amazing day."
Among the five champions, four were seniors: James Nicholson, who also won the Outstanding Wrestler award at 171 pounds, Jake Ellis at 119, Tim Santry at 130 and Max Agasar at 145. Junior John Bolich won the 160-pound title. As a team, the Golden Bears finished second, just 38 points behind CR South, 2 1/2 points ahead of Pennsbury, but well ahead of CR North and Neshaminy.
"Freshman year was rough; we got beat up a lot," Ellis said. "We always ended up at the bottom, but the last two years, we've turned it around and now we're on top. It's a great feeling. At first, it just felt great getting five guys into the (sectional) finals, then to find out we all won really topped everything off. It was great. It's not a feeling you get every day."
For the 24 hours after sectionals, Nicholson was caught up in the moment - five champs and an OW award to decorate his trophy case. Wow.
Then he let his thoughts drift back four years.
"My freshman year, this class went 0-2 at sectionals, I think, except Timmy (Santry), and he went to states," said Nicholson, who won a 2-2 overtime rideout over CR South's Bobby Lavelle in Saturday's final. "Our eighth-grade year, we were coming off a championship year in middle school, so the coaches knew we had talent. It was just a matter of getting us to that high school level, doing all the offseason stuff. The coaches always kept our spirits good, so we stuck with it."
Ellis, too, credited Muller and assistant Bill Marino, a former state champion at Upper Dublin.
"We started to realize the talent we had, but we just needed to develop and grow," said Ellis. "The coaches pushed us to do it and we got there with hard work and dedication."
That hard work and dedication was tested somewhat earlier this month when a skin issue forced the Bears to forfeit a match against Boyertown in the quarterfinals of the District One Team Duals tournament then cancel a title-solving match against Norristown. Even though UM couldn't wrestle Norristown, the Bears and Eagles agreed to share the Suburban One League American Conference championship.
Due to the skin issue, the Bears hadn't wrestled since Feb. 3 when they arrived at Abington for sectionals.
"It was all right to get that little break, because we got to regroup and heal our injuries," Ellis said. "The first day we practiced, I felt out of it, I thought I lost my touch. When you go through a break like that, you don't feel as fresh right when you come back, but it took only a day or two to get back to where we were."
And it led to somewhere Upper Moreland has never been - with five wrestlers climbing to the top of the podium.

Upper Moreland sends four into Regional semi-finals

NEWTOWN - Most of the names are familiar, although a couple of surprises managed to wrestle their way into today's semifinals at the PIAA Class AAA Southeast Regional Tournament at Council Rock North.
All told, nine area wrestlers are a step away from the championship round while a handful of others dropped into the consolations after losing in the preliminary round Friday night.
The wrestlers will be back at it this morning (9:30) for the first round of consolations. The semifinals should start around 11:30 a.m., and the championship finals are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
Those semifinals will include four Upper Moreland wrestlers, as stalwarts Tim Santry (130 pounds), John Bolich (160) and James Nicholson (171) will be joined by Will Dill (135).
Dill, who was pinned in last week's District-One North finale by Council Rock South's Josh Dziewa, crushed his two opponents Friday, winning by fall in his opener and by technical fall in his quarterfinal match.
"I know I have to go all out," Dill said. "I wanted to get into a rhythm and I did that.
"I really want to try and get to states and make it and get some hardware."
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the PIAA state meet in Hershey, beginning Thursday.
Hatboro-Horsham's Matt Harkins (119), another standout, will have senior teammate Nick Lynch (171) with him in the semifinals.
Lynch, who made it to regionals as a sophomore before a cut on his head (which required five staples to close) limited him in the postseason last year, thumped Boyertown's Brock Hallman in his opener and then knocked off La Salle's C.J. Burns to earn his spot.
"As a senior, this is my last chance and that's what's fueling me," Lynch said. "Burns is tough and I knew I had to wrestle my best to beat him.
"My ultimate goal is to get to states, and that's what I'm going to try to do."
Central Bucks West's Bubba McGinley punched his ticket to the semifinals by dismantling Radnor's Bob Meyers, 13-0, in the quarterfinals.
From the first whistle, McGinley was relentless in his assault and it paid off.
"If you don't attack at this level, your opponent will," McGinley said. "It's hard to come from behind because everyone here is good.
"Nobody wants to drop into the wrestlebacks (consolations) because your back is against the wall every match."
Souderton's Joe Stolfi, the heaviest of the area wrestlers in the semifinals at 215, seems destined for a championship match against Oxford's Nick Ruggear.
Stolfi crunched Greg Gruschow, a state qualifier a year ago, 14-0, in his quarterfinal and will meet Scott Syrek (Owen J. Roberts), a state medalist last season, in the semifinals.
Syrek, however, is battling an injured left shoulder and barely won his quarterfinal (4-3) against Marcus Collins of Monsignor Bonner.
As for Ruggear, who beat Stolfi, 4-2, in the regional consolation finals last year, he topped Phoenixville's Ken Cenci, 17-5.
Quakertown's Scott Wolfinger is in the 125-pound semifinals, thanks to a 12-5 win over Sun Valley's Dan Stover. Wolfinger will take on La Salle's Casey Kent in the semifinals.
Note: It was a rough night for District 12 wrestlers, as they went 1-13 in the first round and have just six wrestlers in the semifinals. Four of those six are from La Salle, coached by the legendary Vic Stanley. Stanley was the coach who put Council Rock on the map in the 1970s, leading the Indians to the first state team title ever won by a District One school in 1977.

Easy does it

Souderton's Joe Stolfi cruised through a difficult 189-pound weight class to claim the area's only Southeast Regional championship.
NEWTOWN TWP. - It's not easy, at this level, trying to win a regional title, but Souderton's Joe Stolfi made it look that way.
Stolfi, a junior, continued his dominating postseason effort Saturday night by putting away Oxford's Nick Ruggear, 6-3, in the 215-pound finale at the PIAA Class AAA Southeast Regional at Council Rock North High School. He's the Indians' first regional champ since Brian Tanen won at 152 in 2007.
"I just wanted to try and do my best," said Stolfi, who will take a 34-2 mark into Thursday's opening round of the PIAA state tournament in Hershey.
"My goal is to definitely try to place. I need to do the best I can and see where that takes me."
The three opponents Stolfi defeated - Conestoga's Greg Gruschow, Scott Syrek of Owen J. Roberts and Ruggear, all state qualifiers a year ago - brought a combined season record of 96-9 to the tournament.
"I knew I had a tough bracket," Stolfi said. "Those guys are all good and anything can happen at states."
Stolfi will be joined in Hershey by Upper Moreland's James Nicholson (second at 171), John Bolich (second at 160) and Tim Santry (fourth at 130).
Hatboro-Horsham will have two entrants in Matt Harkins (second at 119) and Nick Lynch (fourth at 171). Central Bucks West's Seth Ehlo (fourth at 135), Quakertown's Scott Wolfinger (second at 125) and William Tennent's Kevin Flack (third at 103) also advanced to states.
Of the nine area wrestlers who qualified, the top four in each weight class did, only Lynch, Santry and Nicholson are seniors.
Council Rock South won the team title with 111 points, followed by La Salle (93), Boyertown (82 1/2), UM (68 1/2) and Council Rock North (67 1/2). There was no Outstanding Wrestler award given, but if there were, it would have gone to CR North's Jamie Callender at 189.
Callender, the state runner-up last year at the same weight, defeated Springfield-Delco's Andre Petroski, third at 189 in Hershey in 2009, 11-6 in overtime in a match that had the huge crowd jumping.
That huge crowd also didn't like the fact that Nicholson ended up losing to Downingtown East's Robbie Fitzgerald in a rideout.
Fitzgerald got hit for a stalling point to tie the match with two seconds left in the first overtime and seemed on the verge of getting another while trying to hold Nicholson down in the rideout period.
"We have to try to move on and put this in the past," said UM coach Stefan Muller. "James will be the first to tell you he has to learn from this and he will.
"The big thing is he's going to states and anything can happen."
Bolich again ran into nemesis John Staudenmayer of Plymouth Whitemarsh in his final and dropped a 5-0 decision. Staudenmayer also beat Bolich in last week's District One-North finale and in their dual meet.
"We've known each other forever and John is really good," Bolich said. "My goal is still to go to Hershey and get a medal. If I wrestle up to par, I hope to be high on the podium."
As for Harkins, he had a wild match against Boyertown's Matt Malfaro that Malfaro pulled out, 11-9. As usual, Harkins fought until the end and nearly scored a late-second takedown to tie things up.
"I'm disappointed, but it still feels good to make states," Harkins said. "This will be my first time and it's exciting. I'm not sure what to expect, but I know I have to be ready."
Wolfinger made it to states two years ago as a freshman, but saw his season end abruptly last year when he missed weight at districts.
On Saturday night, he had a rematch in the finals from a week ago with Council Rock South's Matt Rappo and came out on the short end of a 10-6 score.
"He's a monster on top," Wolfinger said. "I feel pretty good against him when we're on our feet, but he's just tough.
"I just want to go to states and place and wrestle as well as I can."
